Major Somnath Sharma and the Battle of Badgam
Major Somnath Sharma was a brave Indian Army officer and the first recipient of the Param Vir Chakra. His story is an inspiring example of courage, patriotism, duty and sacrifice.
In 1947, after India became independent, invaders entered Kashmir as part of Operation Gulmarg. Their aim was to capture important places, including the Srinagar airport. The Government of India sent soldiers to defend Kashmir and its borders.
Major Somnath Sharma was the commander of D Company of the 4th Battalion of the Kumaon Regiment. Although his left hand was in plaster, he insisted on going with his soldiers. He believed that he should never leave his men alone in danger.
On 3 November 1947, Major Somnath and his 90 soldiers were sent to Badgam. They soon discovered that a large enemy force was approaching. About 500 invaders attacked the small Indian force.
Major Somnath understood that the enemy wanted to capture the Srinagar airfield. He requested air strikes and helped guide the aircraft towards the enemy. Even though his soldiers were greatly outnumbered, he continued to encourage them to fight bravely.
The Indian soldiers began running out of ammunition. Major Somnath was asked to withdraw, but he refused. He decided to fight until the last man and the last round. Soon afterwards, a mortar shell hit his position and he died.
Even after his death, his soldiers continued fighting for more than six hours. Their resistance gave enough time for reinforcements to arrive. Their bravery caused heavy losses to the enemy and helped save Srinagar for India.
Major Somnath Sharma was only 24 years old when he sacrificed his life. He was awarded the Param Vir Chakra posthumously and became its first recipient. His life continues to inspire soldiers and citizens because it teaches us the importance of courage, duty, patriotism and self-sacrifice.

मेजर सोमनाथ शर्मा कुमाऊँ रेजिमेंट की 4वीं बटालियन की D कंपनी के कमांडर थे। उनका बायाँ हाथ प्लास्टर में था, फिर भी उन्होंने अपने सैनिकों के साथ युद्ध में जाने पर जोर दिया। उनका मानना था कि वे खतरे में अपने सैनिकों को अकेला नहीं छोड़ सकते।
3 नवंबर 1947 को मेजर सोमनाथ और उनके 90 सैनिकों को बड़गाम भेजा गया। वहाँ उन्हें पता चला कि बहुत बड़ी दुश्मन सेना उनकी ओर बढ़ रही है। लगभग 500 घुसपैठियों ने केवल 90 भारतीय सैनिकों पर हमला कर दिया।
मेजर सोमनाथ समझ गए कि दुश्मन श्रीनगर हवाई अड्डे पर कब्जा करना चाहता है। उन्होंने हवाई हमले की सहायता माँगी और विमानों को दुश्मन के लक्ष्य तक पहुँचाने में मदद की। सैनिकों की संख्या बहुत कम होने के बावजूद उन्होंने अपने सैनिकों का हौसला बढ़ाया।
जब भारतीय सैनिकों का गोला-बारूद समाप्त होने लगा, तब मेजर सोमनाथ को पीछे हटने के लिए कहा गया। लेकिन उन्होंने पीछे हटने से इनकार कर दिया। वे अंतिम सैनिक और अंतिम गोली तक लड़ना चाहते थे। कुछ ही समय बाद मोर्टार का गोला उनके पास गिरा और उनकी मृत्यु हो गई।
उनकी मृत्यु के बाद भी उनके सैनिक छह घंटे से अधिक समय तक लड़ते रहे। उनके संघर्ष के कारण अतिरिक्त सैनिकों को आने का समय मिला। उनके साहस ने दुश्मन को भारी नुकसान पहुँचाया और श्रीनगर को भारत के पास सुरक्षित रखने में महत्वपूर्ण भूमिका निभाई।
मेजर सोमनाथ शर्मा ने केवल 24 वर्ष की आयु में देश के लिए अपना जीवन बलिदान कर दिया। उन्हें मरणोपरांत परमवीर चक्र दिया गया और वे इसके पहले प्राप्तकर्ता बने। उनकी कहानी आज भी हमें साहस, कर्तव्य, देशभक्ति और त्याग की सीख देती है।
