THE PORTRAIT OF A LADY — Khushwant Singh
Easy English Summary
“The Portrait of a Lady” is a touching story about the author Khushwant Singh and his grandmother.
The author had always seen his grandmother as an old, wrinkled, short, fat and slightly bent woman. She always wore white clothes, counted the beads of her rosary and kept praying. Although she was not physically pretty, the author considered her peaceful and beautiful.
In the village, the author and his grandmother were very close. She woke him up, got him ready for school and went to school with him because the school was attached to a temple. While he studied, she read religious scriptures. On their way back, she fed stale chapattis to village dogs.
When they moved to the city, their relationship began to change. The author went to an English school by motor bus, so his grandmother could no longer accompany him. She was unhappy because she could not help him with English and science and because his school did not teach religion or scriptures. She strongly disliked the idea of music lessons.
When the author went to university, he got a separate room. Their daily companionship ended. Grandmother spent most of her time spinning the wheel, praying and feeding sparrows. Feeding the sparrows became the happiest part of her day.
Later, the author went abroad for five years. His grandmother calmly saw him off while praying. When he returned, she welcomed him lovingly. That evening, unusually, she stopped praying and celebrated his return by singing songs and beating an old drum.
The next day she became ill. She believed that her end was near and spent her final hours praying. Soon she died peacefully.
After her death, thousands of sparrows gathered silently around her body. They did not chirp or eat the bread offered to them. When her body was taken away for cremation, they quietly flew away. Their silence seemed like a tribute to the grandmother.
Hindi Explanation

POEM — A PHOTOGRAPH by Shirley Toulson
Easy Summary
The poem is about time, memories and loss.
The poet looks at an old photograph of her mother when she was about twelve years old. Her mother was standing on a beach with her two cousins, Betty and Dolly.
Many years later, the poet’s mother used to look at the photograph and laugh at the clothes they had worn on the beach.
Now the poet’s mother is dead. The photograph remains, but the people and moments have changed or disappeared. The poet feels such deep sorrow that she has no words to express it.
Central Idea
The poem shows the temporary nature of human life and the permanence of memories. Human beings grow old and die, while nature, represented by the sea, continues almost unchanged.
