What is Punctuation?

Punctuation marks are symbols used in writing.
विराम चिन्ह लिखने में उपयोग किए जाने वाले चिह्न हैं।


1. Full Stop (.) – पूर्ण विराम

Use at the end of a sentence.
Example:

  • I am a boy.
  • She is happy.

2. Comma (,) – अल्पविराम

Use to separate items.
Example:

  • I like apples, mangoes, and grapes.

3. Question Mark (?) – प्रश्नवाचक चिन्ह

Use at the end of a question.
Example:

  • What is your name?

4. Exclamation Mark (!) – विस्मयादिबोधक चिन्ह

Use to show feelings.
Example:

  • Wow!
  • What a beautiful day!

5. Apostrophe (‘) – अपोस्ट्रॉफी

Shows possession.
Example:

  • Riya’s book

Types of Punctuation

1. Full Stop (.)

Used after statements and commands.
Example:

  • Close the door.
  • He plays cricket.

2. Comma (,)

Used:

  • In lists
  • After introductory words
  • Before conjunctions

Example:

  • I bought milk, bread, and butter.
  • Yes, I agree.

3. Question Mark (?)

Used after direct questions.
Example:

  • Where are you going?

4. Exclamation Mark (!)

Used to express strong emotion.
Example:

  • What a surprise!

5. Apostrophe (‘)

Used for:

  1. Possession → Ravi’s pen
  2. Contractions → Don’t, It’s

6. Quotation Marks (” “)

Used for direct speech.
Example:

  • She said, “I am ready.”

7. Colon (:)

Used before a list.
Example:

  • Bring the following: pen, notebook, pencil.

8. Semicolon (;)

Used to join closely related sentences.
Example:

  • I was tired; I went to bed.
